Treasurer’s report –Treasurer Ed Dunleavy reported that HS had been living off a cushion for the past few years but is now facing a financial deficit.  In 2007 HSC ran at a loss of $10,836.00; the projection for this year is a loss of $7,906.00.  We must look at ways to become financially stable.  Motion by Dale Walter to accept Treasurer’s report as presented, second by Ann Wayt.  Unanimously carried.

President’s Remarks – President Ed Moore reported that:

  • The Museum re-opened after a year of being closed for renovation in April with a ribbon cutting by the Mayor.  Ed especially thanked John Griffith for all his work in painting the museum.  He also thanked all those who worked so hard on displays and physical labor including the Museum Studies class from Shepherd University that really helped to get us open on time.

  • Acquisitions –
      • Helen Cook Barrow donated to the museum a John Woltz clock that had been in her family for as long as she could remember.  She had promised her father that she would not let it leave Shepherdstown.  The clock works are being repaired at the moment.
      • Circus Posters – Three (3) 1940’s Circus Posters from the circus that was held at Morgan’s Grove Park and was sponsored by the Men’s Club were donated by Richard Raymond.

  • Grants Received
      • Due to the work of Roy Winkel, a grant was received from The Shenandoah Potomac Garden Council to extend the flagstone patio and replant bushes in the garden area.

  • History Talks were well received this year as we focused on the crafts people of the town.  Nick Blanton spoke on Sheetz Rifles, Jim Horner spoke on clocks in the Shenandoah Valley, the Parziales spoke on pottery in the Shenandoah Valley focusing on Weis, and Dan Tokar spoke on Shindler Kettles.  Thank you to them all.

  • Death of board members – Ed acknowledged the passing of two board members who had supported Historic Shepherdstown for many years, Bill Ayers and Peg McNaughton.  They will be missed not only by HS but all the organizations they contributed to in the community.
