Purpose: The purposes of the Historic Shepherdstown Commission are:

  • To promote a greater and better Shepherdstown;
  • To procure a wider recognition of the assets which make it such a desirable community in which to live;
  • To preserve its heritage from more than two centuries, its ancient landmarks, and a record of the varied contributions of its outstanding men and women;
  • To possess, by gift or purchase, properties of historic value.

  • Presentation of the Preservation Award to Shepherd University for the restoration of Reynolds Hall.
  • Presentation and vote on recommended changes to Historic Shepherdstown Commission's By-Laws.

  • Speaker - Hannah Geffert - "John Brown and his Secret Associates."

 

WRNR Eastern Panhandle Talk host and Shepherd University professor, Hannah Geffert, will present a talk for Historic Shepherdstown entitled "John Brown and his Secret Associates."  The talk will explore how knowledge of the twentieth century Civil Rights Movement and the tools of modern communications helped Allies for Freedom, a national research group, discover the relationship between John Brown and African-Americans in planning and executing the 1859 raid on Harpers Ferry.
